Two-time Grammy award winners Brave Combo will kick off the 2012 Summer Breeze free concert series on Sunday, May 20, in Norman’s Lions Park at the corner of Symmes and Flood. This first concert is part of a collaborative arts festival presented by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, the Firehouse Art Center, The Jacobson House, The Norman Arts Council, and the Performing Arts Studio. The third annual Luncheon on the Grass hands-on arts activities and entertainment will take place in the park from 4 pm – 6:30 pm. At 6:00 pm the Norman Public Arts Board will dedicate Douglas Shaw Elder’s original sculpture being placed in Lions Park. The group’s latest public arts project will be made from this original sculpture. Brave Combo will take the stage at 7 pm. Bring seating and refreshments for a full afternoon and evening of art, music, and fun in the park!
Brave Combo has perfected a world music mix that includes salsa, meringue, rock, cumbia, conjunto, polka, zydeco, classical, cha cha, the blues and more. They are America’s Premier Dance band and a rollicking, rocking, rhythmic global journey — offering what one critic recently wrote, “Even if you come for the party, you’ll leave with something of a musical education.”
Keyboardist, guitarist, accordionist, and singer Carl Finch founded the band in 1979. Alongside Finch for most of Brave Combo’s 30 years has been multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Barnes, who joined in 1983. Barnes is known for his lively and imaginative stage wear, as well as playing an array of reeds and woodwinds, harmonica, pennywhistle, guitars, you name it, sometimes in multiple, simultaneous combinations. Rounding out the current line-up are trumpet player Danny O’Brien, drummer Alan Emert and Little Jack Melody on electric bass.
For additional information contact The Performing Arts Studio, 405-307-9320, or visit www.pasnorman.org.
Summer Breeze Concerts are produced by the Performing Arts Studio and are made possible in part by grants from the Norman Arts Council, the Oklahoma Arts Council, and from businesses and individuals including: Michael Miller; Jamie Belknap, DDS, Norman Smile Center; Andi Berry, Wyoming Art Therapy; Skye Diers, Gingerbread Nursery School; and Republic Bank and Trust. Additional support comes from Cardinal Engineering; David Fries Roofing; Tom McAuliffe, Don Cies Real Estate; Old Republic Title Company of Oklahoma; The Spirit Shop; Dale Wares,Wares Properties; The Earth Natural Foods; The Montford Inn; and City of Norman Parks and Recreation Department.

From Venice Arts:
On May 19th, from 12:00pm until 2:00pm, Venice Arts Gallery will host the Opening Reception for the 2012 Student Culminating Exhibition, the most exciting and vibrant way to directly experience the impact of Venice Arts’ programs on young people’s lives.
Doritos by Julie Cabral, age 19.
This show, a stunning finale to a year of hard work, will feature the best of student films, photographs, animations, comics, as well as mixed- and multi-media pieces from the 2011-12 workshops. A potluck reception with food and beverages for families, students, mentors, and show attendees will also take place during the exhibition. The Venice Arts Gallery is located at 1702 Lincoln Boulevard in Venice.

Friends by Jeanette Vasquez, age 17.
Each year, over 400 students participate in our Art Mentoring workshops, expanding their creativity and learning about visual storytelling through after-school, weekend, and summer workshops. These workshops are free for low income families and give students a chance to work with talented teaching artists and high-quality professional equipment, jumpstarting their personal artistic exploration.
Discussing the impact that her involvement with Venice Arts’ Art Mentoring Program has had on her development as a young artists, Jeannette Vasquez, a 17-year-old photography student, said “Venice Arts made me feel confident as an artist and gave me the resources to bloom as one, too. I would have never picked up a camera before this place because I wouldn’t have had one to pick up. The energy of the people here is amazing. I always feel like I am at home.”
Takashima House, Reina Brown, age 17.
Students like Jeanette and their artist mentors work remarkably hard on putting together finished final projects and the Venice Arts Gallery is proud to showcase their efforts. The 2012 Student Culminating Exhibition is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the celebration of Venice Arts’ students and the hard work they’ve done this past year. The exhibit also serves to honor our graduating seniors, many of whom have been taking classes with Venice Arts for years and will now be the first in their families to go to college. Reina Brown, age 17, will be attending Santa Monica College this fall and Izzy Rebollar, age 18, will be attending her first choice school, UC Davis.
In addition to photography and other wall-based works, the 2012 Student Culminating Show will also feature screenings of student-made video projects produced for What’s Going On…Now, a national project of The Kennedy Center for which Venice Arts is the Southern California youth partner. In the spirit of Marvin Gaye’s breakout album, What’s Going On, which spoke to the issues of the day–the war in Vietnam, racism, and environmental issues–this project challenges the youth of today to examine and discuss the critical issues of today through their creative art and media projects. During the exhibition, Venice Arts’ Youth Media Crew will screen their visual “tracks” — video responses to Marvin Gaye’s music in light of modern political and social issues. Their work is also featured on the Kennedy Center’s project website and two of our young artists travelled to D.C. this week for a Youth Summit to present their work and attend a concert featuring John Legend, Sharon Jones, and the Dap-Kings.
Venice Arts’ Art Mentoring Program continues this summer with Summer Media Arts Camp. Media Arts Camp is a great way for new students and artist-mentors to get involved with all that Venice Arts has to offer. Designed for both new or beginning students as well as continuing or advanced students, the curriculum is diverse and entertaining. Each week in July, Media Arts Camp explores a different aspect of filmmaking, photography, animation, and comics plus a weekly field trip or field shooting experience. On Venice Arts’ website, a full listing of each week’s special activities is outlined. Youth ages 10-18 may pre-enroll for any week that sparks their interest or for all four weeks. In-person registration is required and will be held on June 16th and 23rd at Venice Arts Gallery. Please call 310.578.1745 for an appointment. Camp is free to low-income families and available to non low-income families at a fee.

Yesterday was the annual Art and Eco Fair in Glen Ridge, NJ … and a quick stroll through the booths quickly established the unfortunate selection of vendors: when you see booth after booth with things like “tiki bar” signs (below left), football license plate lamps (below right), and jewelry, body soaps, and other such things, you wonder why is this even called an “art” fair? There were a few legitimate artists showing their paintings and sculpture, but they were in the minority. Maybe it should be re-named the “arts, crafts, and eco” fair instead?

But I’m happy to report that after meandering past the booths, the best part of the show came up: the display of art works by Glen Ridge students … I was very impressed with the quality, skill and imagination of these young artists! Below are a few examples of the great student art … hats off to the Glen Ridge art teachers and their students! We’re not going to list artist names due to privacy issues, but definitely wanted to show some examples of the creative art being made by the students.

By Judy Dales
As summer approaches, our small village braces itself for the frenetic pace of the summer months and the ratcheting up of all activities–recreational, communal, social and familial. We look forward to the return of our summer residents, resumption of the many diverse summer events, and the reopening of The Miller’s Thumb Gallery. Having worked in the Thumb for the past two summers, it occurred to me that now might be the opportune moment to shed a little light on the history and current happenings at The Thumb.
As you know, The Miller’s Thumb stood empty for a a while until several of our summer residents bought it. They had no concrete plans for the building, but aimed to save it from crumbling into oblivion and hoped to discover a viable purpose for the revered historic building.
In the spring of 2011, as major renovations to the building’s exterior were reaching completion, a group of local artists and gallery owners (called The Kingdom Craft Alliance or KCA) were searching for exhibition space as they formulated plans for a display of local art that was part of the state-wide initiative, State of Craft. When The Miller’s Thumb was offered as a place for their exhibit, KCA members jumped at it and quickly laid down plans for a cooperative gallery exhibit where artists could display and sell their work.
The show opened on the 4th of July weekend, 2010 and the response was amazing. People flocked to the building, some merely curious and others drawn by the shopping opportunities, but everyone was thrilled that the beautiful old building had found a new purpose in life. KCA decided to continue the show throughout the summer and artist volunteers took turns supervising the gallery. The exhibit was not only an artistic success, but a financial one as well, which highlighted in a unique way the need for such an attraction in the center of the village.
The exhibition also provided a much needed retail outlet for local artists, but when the owners proposed a continuation of the cooperative arrangement for the following summer, KCA declined. An on-going cooperative gallery presented greater challenges than the group’s leadership felt they could handle. Never the less, the building’s owners were so pleased with the successes of the previous summer that brought just the kind of attention and positive vibe that they had wished for, that they sought a way to continue the gallery model. Eve Passeltiner, one of the KCA artists, was hired as the gallery director for the summer of 2011, and crafts and artworks from all over the state of Vermont were offered for sale.
This is where things got confusing! Although KCA members were all invited to participate in the gallery in the summer of 2011, they would no longer run it, which left the organization in a bit of a dilemma: the gallery was their original reason for existence, and without that responsibility, they found themselves rather at loose ends. So during the winter 2010-11, they rolled up their collective sleeves and decided what, if any, purpose they could serve now.
It was agreed that all who had participated in the first-year venture had enjoyed working together and meeting on a regular basis. The name of the organization was changed to Caspian Arts and it was decided that the group would provide networking, educational and marketing opportunities for local artists. In their first year, a brochure listing the location of CA artist’s studios was produced and distributed throughout the area, a website (www.caspianartsvt.com) is in the works, and plans for an ambitious summer event are underway. There will be a Caspian Arts Studio Tour (10-5) and Raffle Party (5:30-7) on Tuesday, July 31. This is an opportunity to visit with artists and see creativity in action. Visitors will collect tickets at each studio visited and the tickets will be entered into a raffle of artworks donated by participating Caspian Arts members. This is a unique opportunity to own art created by local artists!
The Miller’s Thumb Gallery and Caspian Arts are now two separate entities, but their histories are firmly intertwined. Hopefully this little history lesson will help clear up any confusion about who’s doing what and also serve to remind everyone that both entities need support. It is a joy to see The Miller’s Thumb bustling with activity once again, but in order to thrive, it needs not just tourist dollars, but local support as well. Caspian Arts members appreciate the opportunity to educate the community about art in general, and the art they produce, in particular. Buying art from Greensboro artists is not only a way to “buy local” but is also a way to support your friends and neighbors whose creativity enriches us all.
